GENERAL DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES
ABF Freight System, Inc., an acknowledged leader in Less-Than-Truckload (LTL) transportation since 1923, has the following Packaging Engineering opportunity. This newly created position reports to the Manager of Packaging Engineering & Material Handling. This department supports packaging requirements, development and consulting initiatives for the entire corporation ? internal departments and external customers. This position can be based at one of several ABF facilities.
This position will be responsible for internal and external consulting on a broad scope of projects, including:
* Provides technical direction and expertise while consulting with external customers on distribution packaging development and distribution packaging improvements for a wide range of commodities.
* Visiting customer facilities, reviewing existing packaging, writing and presenting reports/recommendations on packaging improvements.
* Writing and presenting formal documents, PowerPoint presentations and opinions, to customers and management.
* Developing, writing, and presenting distribution packaging specifications and CAD drawings.
* Managing multiple projects with critical timelines.
Preferred Qualifications
* BS or MS in Packaging Engineering from a recognized University Program.
* Three to ten years experience, preferably in the area of distribution packaging development or distribution packaging testing.
* Knowledge of the LTL transportation environment.
* Organized, self-directed and ability to operate independently.
* Ability to travel, domestically, 15% to 25%, as needed.
* Team Player ? Cross-functional team member/leader.
* Very strong written and oral communication skills.
* Very comfortable with public speaking.
* Presents an expert/authoritative image to others.
* Proficient in software packages, including: MS Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Access, etc.), AutoCAD and/or Solid Works, Cape/Tops.
* Expertise/experience in/with the following materials associated with distribution packaging ? corrugated, wood, metals, reusable systems, protective packaging/cushioning, flexible films, labeling, and others.
* Working knowledge of the National Motor Freight Classification (NMFC) ? packaging requirements and test procedures, ASTM test procedures, ISTA test procedures.
* Experience with regulated materials (49 CFR) a plus.
